Felimare villafranca (Risso, 1818)
[Hypselodoris villafranca]

Ordo: Nudibranchia
Subordo: Doridina
Familia: Chromodorididae

Perhaps the most frequently observed of all portuguese nudibranchs. The multiple white, yellow and/or orange longitudinal lines on the mantle, with a more or less irregular pattern, also make it one of the most easily identifiable within its genus. The white lines behind the rhinophores fprming an inverted Y are characeristic. This species has direct development and its spawn are easily distinguished showing relatively few yello eggs big enough to be seen by a naked eye. The recently published work by Rebecca Fay Johnson and Terrence M. Gosliner has reviewed the phylogeny of this family so the atlantic members of the Hypselodoris genus are reclassified under the Felimare genus. Therefore, the most recent classification of this species is Felimare villafranca.
